Oschersleben DTM: Ex-F1 racer Timo Glock takes first pole for BMW

The day's running has been delayed significantly by heavy fog in the region, with Saturday's race now scheduled to start at 2:55pm local time.

When qualifying eventually got underway, BMW made the most of its performance weight advantage, with its drivers running on average 24.7kg lighter than Audi drivers and 18.12kg lighter than Mercedes.

After sitting out the first part of the session, Glock set his lap of 1m19.821s - the fastest since Turn 1 was reprofiled in 2007 - with seven minutes remaining.

Times improved in the closing stages, but Glock's remained good enough to claim pole by just 0.056 seconds ahead of Friday practice pacesetter Augusto Farfus.

Tom Blomqvist was a career-best third, within 0.072s of Glock, ahead of Antonio Felix da Costa and Bruno Spengler, who topped the shortened Saturday morning session, see below.

Mercedes driver Pascal Wehrlein was the best of the rest in sixth, as the man he's chasing in the championship, Mattias Ekstrom, struggled with a shifting problem.

Audi's two-time champion will start 24th and last, his worst qualifying result in the DTM, as one second covered the entire field.

Marco Wittmann and Martin Tomczyk made it seven BMW drivers inside the top eight, ahead of the best of the Audis, Miguel Molina.

The Spaniard finished the session in the barriers, and will share the fifth row of the grid with stablemate Edoardo Mortara.

SPENGLER TOPS DELAYED PRACTICE

The weekend's second practice session eventually got underway more than three hours late, and was cut from 45 minutes of running to 25, resembling a qualifying dress rehearsal.

Following the brand's sweep of the top four on Friday afternoon, Spengler led another all-BMW top four.

Farfus was second, ahead of Maxime Martin and da Costa, with Wehrlein the best of the rest in fifth.

Jamie Green was the top Audi in ninth, with Ekstrom 23rd after an off-track excursion at the penultimate corner.
