Italian GP: Red Bull F1 team plans double Renault engine change

Red Bull plans to perform a double engine change on both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat's Formula 1 cars ahead of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix

Team principal Christian Horner had already confirmed a move to a sixth internal combustion engine (ICE) for both drivers, which would mean a 10-place grid penalty for both.

However, it has since emerged that Ricciardo will drop a further 15 places after fitting his fifth turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K.

Meanwhile, Kvyat will drop an extra five places for taking a fifth turbocharger.

It is now Red Bull's intention to fit a seventh ICE to both cars after second practice at Monza, as Renault has enough power units to fulfil the request.

The move will increase its pool of power units that will be free from penalty, as McLaren-Honda did at the last race in Belgium.

As the hefty penalties incurred by both drivers for the first change will mean they start at the back, the second change will effectively be free as a tail-end start is now the maximum penalty possible.

That will give Red Bull two relatively fresh engines per driver which can be swapped without penalty for the upcoming races in Singapore and Japan.

The Russian Grand Prix, where Horner has said Red Bull is expecting an updated engine from Renault, follows.
