European F3 Zandvoort: Antonio Giovinazzi takes first pole of 2015
Antonio Giovinazzi grabbed pole position for the first Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend at Zandvoort
On a clear track, the Jagonya Ayam protege from southern Italy nailed two successive hot laps very early in the session in his Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen that could not be beaten by anyone else for his first pole of 2015.
Felix Rosenqvist came closest, although the Swede fell 0.097 seconds short in his Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes.
In a session in which traffic played a major part, Rosenqvist took until his seventh flying lap to set his time, whereas Giovinazzi had set his fastest on his third, when the tyres were at peak performance. On theoretical bests combining the three sectors, Rosenqvist would have been fastest.
Motopark runner Markus Pommer pitted halfway through the session before putting in his best qualifying performance of the season, the reigning German F3 champion taking third.
That relegated the Prema car of Jake Dennis to fourth, while championship leader Charles Leclerc, on the home track of his team Van Amersfoort Racing, was fifth.
Continuing Motopark's good form, the team's Malaysian driver Nabil Jeffri jumped forward about 10 rows from his usual territory to take sixth with a lap right at the end of the session.
The fourth row is occupied by Lance Stroll (Prema) and the Signature car of Alexander Albon, with Carlin's George Russell in ninth and then Mikkel Jensen heading his spectacular Mucke Motorsport team-mates Maximilian Gunther and Santino Ferrucci for the final spot in the top 10.
After his fire in the morning - which was in the wiring loom - Sam MacLeod joined the session a little late and took 22nd place.
