Renault or nothing for Red Bull in F1 in 2016 - Dietrich Mateschitz

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has suggested Renault is its only engine option if it stays in Formula 1 in 2016, ruling out a switch to another manufacturer

Mateschitz took Red Bull's latest swipe at its engine supplier Renault earlier this week, claiming the French firm's performance has.

Red Bull has repeatedly threatened to quit F1 if its engine situation does not improve, and Mateschitz says that could happen at the end of this year if Renault does not provide guarantees of its commitment to moving up the order.

"We will not endure a third season in these circumstances," said Mateschitz, who has met with F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone this weekend at the Red Bull Ring for talks.

"Last year we at least could secure second in the world championship and score three wins, but this season we are nowhere."

On the subject of Red Bull staying in F1 beyond this year, he added: "There [must be] a commitment from Renault that they want to improve significantly, that they can do this and thirdly that they can finance this."

Mateschitz denied that Red Bull is in talks with the Volkswagen Group over a Formula 1 project, and he ruled out alternatives such as designing its own F1 power unit or becoming a customer of one of the other existing suppliers.

"We are no engine manufacturers," he said. "If you are a customer, you are at least 30-40 horsepower down an have no realistic chance to go for a championship."

While Red Bull owns the Austrian GP venue in Spielberg, Mateschitz said its deal - which currently lasts until 2020 - would not be affected if he withdrew his two teams from F1.
