Daniel Ricciardo: No Canadian GP engine penalty plan for Red Bull

Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull still aims to get through the Canadian Grand Prix weekend without engine penalties, rather than choosing to sacrifice qualifying for the Montreal Formula 1 race

A series of Renault power unit failures have left both Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat on the fourth and final engines of their allocation, making penalties inevitable.

Team boss Christian Horner had suggested Red Bull may take the penalty in Canada, where qualifying is less important because there are overtaking opportunities.

But Ricciardo said: "This weekend, we're committed to trying to make the fourth engine get through.

"So all going well, we'll stay with this one.

"Ideally we get through [the next race in] Austria as well but that's probably asking a lot."

Ricciardo finished 10th quickest in second practice, one place behind team-mate Kvyat, with Mercedes, Ferrari, Williams and Lotus in front.

The Australian was disappointed with Friday considering the team had achieved its best result of the season in Monaco, with Kvyat fourth and Ricciardo fifth.

"In terms of performance, we would have liked to be more competitive," said Ricciardo.

"We tried quite a lot between the two sessions, some pretty big changes on the car.

"We were a bit behind after first practice, but we came back to more conventional set-up this afternoon.

"It was working better but we didn't get enough laps. We have still got another step to make.

"I think it's tight, Lotus and Force India showed their nose, which was a bit of a surprise, so I think when we get it right, we should be in front of them.

"We will move forward tomorrow but we were not as competitive as would like today."
