Indianapolis Indy Lights: Rayhall wins as Jones and Harvey tangle

The 20-year-old rookie drafted past polesitter Ed Jones to take the lead at the start, and survived sustained pressure from Friday's winner Jack Harvey to secure the victory.

"In my head, that was longer than the six hours I've driven in endurance races," said Rayhall, whose Lights campaign is his single-seater debut after a sportscar-based career so far.

"Jack was probably faster than me, but I was trying to save my tyres for the end in case he got close.

"I never expected this. Racing against guys like Max [Chilton], RC [Enerson], Ed, these guys have been doing open-wheel racing for the last five or six years, while I've done endurance racing.

"I'm inexperienced compared to them; it was an honour yesterday just to be on the podium with them so to be able to win, I'm just blown away."

Harvey was struck by a late problem when his engine went into safety mode on the final lap, dropping him from second to fifth.

It was later discovered that a visor tear-off had become lodged in the intake, causing the engine to overheat.

The Brit's misfortune opened the door for Enerson and Chilton to complete the podium, the latter setting a new Lights lap record along the way.

It was an eventful day for Jones, who rebounded to fourth after falling almost to the back of the field due to contact with Harvey at the start.

The result, coupled with a DNF for double Barber winner Spencer Pigot, who was involved in an incident on lap four, moved the Carlin driver back into the championship lead.
