Former WEC team Ram Racing to run Mercedes in British GT

Former World Endurance Championship team Ram Racing will bring Mercedes back to British GT this season

The European Le Mans Series-winning GT outfit competed with Ferraris in the WEC last season until budget problems forced it to downscale its operation.

It recently finished as runner-up in the Dubai 24 Hours with its newly-acquired Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 and will field Radical champion Lewis Plato in the UK championship this season.

Plato, 21, lifted the Radical Clubmans Cup title in 2013 and tested the Mercedes at the end of last year. He will share with former Lotus GT4 driver Alistair Mackinnon.

"It's great for us to be entering a new series," said Ram team principal Dan Shufflebottom. "The British GT Championship is very strong right now so we were keen to be a part of it.

"We had great success running the SLS in Dubai 24 Hours, our debut race with the car, putting it on the overall podium against some teams very experienced in running it.

"To me, this is testament to our team and it gives me confidence that they will embrace this new challenge in a similar way."

MOTORBASE RETURNS WITH TWO ASTON MARTINS

Porsche Carrera Cup GB race winner Daniel Lloyd will also make his full British GT debut, replacing Michael Caine alongside Ahmad Al Harthy in one of Motorbase's Aston Martin Vantage V12s.

Lloyd contested the Blancpain Sprint Series last year in a Bhai Tech Racing McLaren MP4-12C, and also took part in both the Silverstone and Spa Blancpain events with the Beechdean Aston Martin squad.

Motorbase boss David Bartrum said he was keen to continue to grow the team's GT involvement.

"Having two class drivers like Rory and Dan on-board is great," said Bartrum. "I think we've got two very strong pairings.

"We have to go one better this year in the drivers' championship. It was great to win the teams' title last year, but it's the drivers' that you really want to win so we have to work even harder this season.

"We've still got a third Vantage ready and waiting at the workshop and our intention is to expand the GT squad even further this year."
