Brian Barnhart recalled for second tenure as IndyCar race director
Brian Barnhart has been installed for a second tenure as IndyCar race director, and will lead the series' three-steward race control system for the 2015 season
Barnhart, who also holds the post of vice president of competition, previously served as the series' race director between 1997 and 2011.
He replaces Beaux Barfield, who returned to the United Sportscar Championship at the end of last season.
Barnhart cut a controversial figure in the paddock towards the end of his previous tenure as race director, and was criticised during his final season by several drivers for what they considered to be inconsistent application of the rules.
He was also widely lampooned after making the decision to restart the 2011 New Hampshire race despite numerous reports from teams that it was raining too hard.
The conditions triggered a multi-car accident at the green flag, and Barnhart later admitted responsibility for the error.
Despite the controversies, IndyCar president of competition and operations Derrick Walker said Barnhart's experience made him a natural choice for the role.
"We believe that based on his extensive experience in race control, combined with the three-steward system, Brian Barnhart is a good fit as IndyCar Race Director," said Walker.
"The process allows the race director to focus on running the race, without the double-duty of reviewing multiple replays and simultaneously trying to make a call.
"In terms of determining penalties our process defines that a majority vote amongst the three stewards is required, which ensures a jury-like process.
"Last year we found that this was a fair system when making difficult judgment calls."
Under the three-steward system, which made its debut last year, all in-race penalties are determined by a two-thirds vote among the respective stewards officiating each event.
Under this system, the race director role is less autonomous than it was during Barnhart's previous time at the helm.
Barnhart added: "This is a role that I've done for a number of years and I take a great deal of pride in being race director of the IndyCar Series.
"One of the things that excites me the most is the steward system we implemented last year.
"That was a great advancement in how we review and make discretionary decisions, and having that assistance in making calls is a big improvement to the way we officiate IndyCar events.
"I'm excited about this opportunity and look forward to doing it again."
