Lotus F1 reserve Sorensen joins Aston Martin for 2015 WEC

The 24-year-old, who was a race winner in GP2 last season, will share a Vantage GTE with Nicki Thiim and Christoffer Nygaard in the eight WEC races, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, in a deal put together by the Danish Young Driver organisation.

The 'Danish' entry run by Aston Martin Racing is moving up to GTE Pro after winning the GTE AM title in the WEC last year with David Heinenmeier Hansson and Kristian Poulsen, who shared their Vantage with both Nicki Thiim and Richie Stanaway over the course of the season.

Young Driver boss Jan Struve said: "After winning the GTE Am class in 2014, we felt it's the right time to raise the game.

"It is a challenge to compete against the worlds leading teams, but already in 2014 we proved that we can race them and I'm really happy that Marco Sorensen is joining Young Drive AMR."

Aston Martin Racing boss John Gaw added: "This is a natural evolution for the Danish car."

Sorensen comes into the Danish line-up as a result of a tie-up between Young Driver and his backer, Saxo Bank.

"I talked about it over the winter with Saxo Bank, and then we thought, let's do it," he told AUTOSPORT.

He stressed that he wasn not giving up his single-seater career.

"My goal is still to race in F1, but it will not harm my ambitions if I gain experience in other classes," he explained.

"Racing single-seaters and GT cars with Aston Martin will only help me to become a complete driver, and if it doesn't work out in GP2, it could open doors in the WEC."

Sorensen said that he would continue in GP2, which has no clashing dates with the WEC in 2015, but was unable reveal details expect to say it would be with a "top team".

The Dane, who is part of the Gravity Sport Management set-up, explained that he would also remain part of the Lotus F1 programme, but that details had yet to be confirmed.

AMR has yet to state its intentions for this year's WEC, but could end up expanding its GTE Pro assault from last year's two cars to three in 2015.

It has so far only confirmed the driver line-up of a GTE Am car to be driven by AMR regulars Pedro Lamy and Paul Dalla Lana and team newcomer Mathias Lauda.
