Silverstone BTCC: Jason Plato wins again as Rob Collard crashes
Jason Plato won the second British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone, which ended prematurely with a dramatic crash for Rob Collard
, Colin Turkington's WSR BMW snatched the advantage at the start, but once more Plato's MG was able to dive back by into Brooklands, this time on lap two.
Plato's hard tyre-shod Triple Eight machine and Turkington (on softs) again ran together for much of the race. At one stage the lead pack comprised nine cars, but Plato always looked in control.
Mat Jackson's Motorbase Ford Focus, also running on softs, stayed with Turkington until his tyres seemed to fade.
That allowed Alain Menu to attack into Copse just after half-distance, the BMR Volkswagen driver completing the move on the run to Becketts.
As the top three edged clear, Jackson put on a robust rear-guard action against the VW of his former team-mate Aron Smith, with the fight ending early when the red flags flew.
Collard had risen as high as fifth, but started to struggle in the closing stages and dropped back.
Going on to lap 21 of 22, the BMW had fallen out of the top 10 when Jack Clarke had a half-spin at Becketts in his Motorbase Focus.
As Collard tried to avoid the Ford, the BMW was side-swiped and launched into a series of rolls.
The race was stopped and the results taken back to the order at the end of lap 20.
NEWS UPDATE: Collard taken to hospital
