Hungaroring DTM: BMW's Marco Wittmann on pole again
Marco Wittmann will start from pole position for the second DTM race in a row after dominating qualifying at the Hungaroring
The BMW driver was untouchable throughout the three-part session, the Hockenheim winner topping Q1, Q2, and Q3 on his way to a second pole position and third front row start of the season.
"Of course, it's great," said Wittmann. "Qualifying went pretty well through all the sessions. The car was pretty good, and I felt comfortable. To be on pole is a great effort for the team."
Timo Glock made it a BMW 1-2 with second place, the ex-Formula 1 driver falling just over two tenths short of pole position in Q3, while Miguel Molina was the best of the Audis - and the only non-BMW in the top six - with third.
Series rookie Maxime Martin made his first appearance in Q3, and wound up an impressive fourth fastest, finishing just two hundredths behind Molina.
"It's great. It's my first Q3, so P4 is quite good," he said. "The team did a good job, BMW is strong, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
On what was a good day for the rookies, Antonio Felix da Costa kept his 100 per cent Q3 record alive, qualifying fifth fastest ahead of Augusto Farfus and Adrien Tambay.
Nico Muller, who like Martin was making his first appearance in Q3, qualified eighth.
At the other end of the grid, it was another disappointing day for Mercedes.
All five drivers eliminated from Q1 were from Mercedes, with Pascal Wehrlein and Robert Wickens the only two making it into the second session.
By the end of Q2, all seven Mercedes were inside the last eight, Martin Tomczyk's 18th place in the Schnitzer BMW the only thing saving the Three-Pointed Star from completely anchoring the grid.
"In normal conditions, points are not possible [tomorrow]," said Wehrlein, who was best of the Mercedes down in 16th.
