Hockenheim DTM: Marco Wittmann tops first practice of 2014

Marco Wittmann set the pace in the first practice session of the new DTM season at Hockenheim

The RMG BMW made several appearances in the top three throughout the 90-minute session, before jumping into first with a 1m32.654s lap just three minutes from the end.

Miguel Molina, who had been in the top three for the majority of the session, did his best to match Wittmann just seconds later, but the Abt Audi driver fell just over half a tenth short.

His team-mate Adrien Tambay finished third with a 1m32.855s.

Rookie Nico Muller did a solid job to finish the session fourth in his Rosberg Audi, ahead of RBM BMW driver Augusto Farfus.

Edoardo Mortara (Abt Audi) wound up finishing the session sixth after leading the way for the majority of the 90 minutes, ahead of MTEK BMW rookie Antonio Felix da Costa and Rosberg Audi's Jamie Green, who was the best Briton in eighth.

It was a miserable session for Mercedes, Pascal Wehrlein the best of the C-Coupes down in 13th on his debut in the HWA squad.

Britons Paul di Resta and Gary Paffett (both HWA) were 18th and 19th fastest respectively, as Mercedes drivers filled the last six positions.
