Barber Indy Lights: Zach Veach converts pole to commanding win

Zach Veach struck an early blow against main title rival Gabby Chaves with a dominant win in the first of this weekend's two Indy Lights races at Barber

The Andretti driver became the first this season to win a race from pole position, crossing the line a comfortable 3.8 seconds ahead of Luiz Razia.

But the critical moment of the race came early on, when front-row starter Alex Baron and Belardi team-mate Chaves came together at the first corner.

Baron was flushed all the way to the rear of the field, while Chaves dropped just two places.

The latter, struggling with apparent damage from the clash, never made any headway in his efforts to rejoin the leaders, however Baron's recovery drive was the high point of the race.

The Frenchman repeatedly caught his rivals unawares through Turns 15 and 16 to work his way back into the midfield and set up a three-way battle for fifth with Chaves and Juan Pablo Garcia; a scrap that was decided in Baron's favour when he passed both in successive laps late in the race.

Matthew Brabham tried to make something of his battle for third with Jack Harvey, but despite having the Brit in his sights for the entire race he was never able to get closer than 0.5s.

Harvey went on to secure his second podium finish in three races.
