DTM makes several rule changes for 2014 season
The DTM has introduced a raft of changes to its sporting regulations for the 2014 season, including a reduction in the number of mandatory pitstops and the introduction of performance ballast
In the races, the number of compulsory pitstops has been reduced from two to one, with stops unable to be made in the first third of the race, or during a safety car period.
There will also be new limits on using Hankook's option tyre, with the softer rubber only allowed to be used for a maximum 50 per cent of the race, in an attempt to simplify race strategies and make the races easier for fans to follow.
Performance ballast will also play its part in the new season, with the winning driver, as well as any drivers from the winning manufacturer who finished inside the top 10 forced to carry an extra five kilograms in the next race.
Drivers from the winning manufacturer who were outside the top 10 will only have a 2.5-kilogram penalty.
Drivers from the second-best manufacturer will use the same weight in the next race, while drivers from the third best manufacturer will either lose 2.5 kilograms if they were inside the top 10, or five kilograms if they finished 11th or worse.
Qualifying for the races will now follow the same system as Formula 1, with three segments, rather than the four used last year.
Q1 will be a 13-minute session, after which the five slowest drivers will be eliminated. Then an 11-minute Q2 session will determine which eight drivers can fight it out for pole in Q3, which will also be 11 minutes long.
Other changes include the ability to use DRS until the very end of the race, and a new limit of two replacement engines per manufacturer, an increase from the one allowed last year.
