Jeff Burton gets part-time Waltrip NASCAR Sprint Cup deal for 2014

Jeff Burton will remain in the NASCAR Sprint Cup on a part-time basis in 2014 after securing a deal for a partial schedule with Michael Waltrip Racing

The 46-year-old was left looking for a drive after being squeezed out of Richard Childress Racing, for which he has raced for the past 10 seasons.

However MWR announced on Monday that he will race the team's #66 entry (formerly the #56) at Las Vegas in early March, in addition to testing at Charlotte on December 9.

Burton will also stand in for Brian Vickers in testing at Daytona in January while the latter continues to recover from a blood clot.

"Michael Waltrip Racing has two teams and drivers racing for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship in 2014 and our third team will play a very important role in that pursuit," team co-owner Rob Kauffman said.

"We were extremely fortunate to have a driver as experienced and respected as Jeff Burton come available.

"He will be able to have an immediate impact as we continue to strive for that last one per cent that separates champions from contenders."

Clint Bowyer and Vickers are MWR's only full-time entries for 2014.

The partial schedule for the #66 entry will be kicked off when team owner Michael Waltrip races the car at the Daytona 500.
