Indian company Mahindra secures Formula E entry

Indian firm Mahindra has become the latest team to secure a Formula E entry for the electric single-seater series' inaugural championship

The company is best known in motorsport for its motorcycle racing programme, but also produces electric vehicles via its Mahindra Reva arm.

Anand Mahindra, the group's chairman and managing director, said Formula E's ethos was a perfect fit for his organisation.

"We strongly believe that Formula E can provide an excellent global showcase for our electric vehicle technology," he said.

"With advanced operations and expertise in electronics, IT, automotive technologies and manufacturing, we are already seeing the fusion of this technology into our electric vehicle operations.

"Racing will further accelerate that trend while Formula E is set to raise awareness globally about the benefits of electric vehicles."

Mahindra ramped up its motorcycle racing programme this year, taking Miguel Oliveira and Efren Vazquez to sixth and ninth in the Moto3 standings.

AUTOSPORT understands the team is likely to have an ex-Formula 1 racer as part of the operation.

The Indian team joins the likes of leading European single-seater operation DAMS, IndyCar's Andretti Autosport and Dragon Racing, ex-Formula 1 team Super Aguri and Audi-backed Abt in the 2014/5 Formula E line-up.
