Pirelli says it has to have more Formula 1 tyre tests before 2014

Pirelli says it is essential that it is allowed to do more tyre testing before the 2014 Formula 1 cars hit the track next January

The 2013 season that has highlighted the problems F1's official tyre supplier has faced in not being able to conduct proper testing.

At the moment, Pirelli only has a test with a 2011 McLaren car lined up for next month and nothing firmed up beyond that.

That is of particular concern because the high torque demands of the new V6 turbo engines will be a challenge for tyres, especially in wet conditions.

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery says ignoring its requests for more running before 2014 testing commences is not an option for F1 chiefs.

"We certainly need to do some work - and a lot more compound work," Hembery told AUTOSPORT. "We want to change a little bit the philosophy.

"This year was aggressive compound wise, perhaps too aggressive in some instances, and we have to improve the mechanical strength of the compounds to get less marbles and less ripping next year - as it will be amplified by the new powerplants."

He called on F1's new Strategy Group to ensure tyre testing provisions were better in 2014.

"We are trying to clarify right now, with the way this sport is structured going forward, the best way to make sure that we get the correct inputs. And it needs the ability to test - and also make corrections after testing," said Hembery.

"We don't want to be held between individual interests. We want the sport to ask us.

"If the new Strategy Group is going to function, we want them to tell us what they want, and we will follow it.

"And, if changes are to be made, it should be approved by a body like that, that has a mixture of teams, FIA and FOM. That will be the ideal situation, otherwise you end up with lobbying and you fall between the interests of the teams."
