Imola Superstars: Tonio Liuzzi dominates practice sessions

Tonio Liuzzi dominated the Superstars International Series practice sessions at Imola, gapping the field by almost a full second in free practice two

The Romeo Ferraris Mercedes driver made his intentions clear enough in free practice one, leading home the Roma Racing Mercedes of Luigi Ferrara by 0.228s.

But it was in the second session that Liuzzi really flew, bettering his FP1 time by than six tenths with a 1m48.825s lap six minutes from the end of the half-hour session.

Ferrara was once again second, although this time the margin was blown out to a whopping 0.977s.

Max Mugelli was the best non-Mercedes entry in both sessions. The Dinamic BMW driver was third fastest in FP1, before finishing fourth in FP2 after swapping positions with Liuzzi's team-mate Thomas Biagi.

While Biagi was hardly on the ultimate pace - he finished FP1 0.9s behind his team-mate and FP2 a full 1.6s in arrears - he did fare much better than his title rival Gianni Morbidelli.

The Audi Italia driver could only manage seventh and eighth across the two session, his best of a 1m51.960s a long way off the pace of the front-running Mercedes.

Francesco Sini (Solaris Chevrolet) and Giovanni Berton (Dinamic Berton) had fifth and sixth places locked down throughout the morning, Berton edging Sini in the first session, before the pair swapped places in the second.
