Ferrari 333 team on course for sportscars return

The team that gave the Ferrari 333SP its first victory is on course to return to sportscar racing after an absence of 17 years

Antonio Ferrari's Eurointernational squad, which as Euromotorsport took a debut win for the Ferrari prototype at Road Atlanta in 1994 with Jay Cochran (pictured), is close to firming up a move into the GT3 arena in 2014.

Ferrari said: "We are working with a Middle Eastern group to put together a programme for next year, which will involve Bahraini and European drivers.

"It is much more than just a plan, and we are still evaluating where we will race, but it is likely that it will be in the Blancpain Endurance Series with a minimum of two cars."

Ferrari explained that Eurointernational would run the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG because of his links with the German manufacturer through his European Formula 3 Championship campaign with its engines.

Former Minardi test driver Giorgio Mondini, who won the Formula Renault V6 title with EuroInternational in 2004, could be involved in the programme.

Ferrari explained that the Italian, who hasn't raced at international level since driving a Kolles-run Audi R10 TDI in 2009, proved quick on his return to the cockpit in a test in one of Eurointernational's F3 cars last year.

Ferrari stressed that his F3 programme in the European championship would be his priority in 2014 and that he could forge a link with another team to help run the GT3 cars.

Euromotorsport raced in CART from 1989-1994 before moving to sportscars to run a Ferrari North America-backed 333SP in IMSA GTP in 1994-1995.

It was also the first team to take the Ferrari 333SP to Le Mans, in 1995, and briefly ran an Osella in IMSA in 1996.

As EuroInternational the team moved back to single-seaters in IndyCar in 1997 and has also raced in Atlantic, FRenault V6s, Formula BMW, Superleague Formula and F3.
