Spielberg FR3.5: Marco Sorensen completes double victory

Marco Sorensen made it back-to-back Formula Renault 3.5 wins at Spielberg on Sunday with another victory from pole position in race two

The Lotus driver controlled the race, and fended off a strong attack from Kevin Magnussen after a restart, to complete his lockout of the weekend.

Magnussen, who had been unable to keep with his countryman prior to the safety car period in the closing stages, eventually settled for second ahead of Nigel Melker.

He was subsequently penalised two seconds however, dropping him to third.

The championship leader had passed Melker on the opening lap, as the Dutchman recovered from getting tapped at Turn 1 by a spinning Stoffel Vandoorne.

Melker pitted earlier than the leaders in a bid to make up ground, but Sorensen and Magnussen were comfortably clear of him when they emerged from the pits two laps later.

Behind the podium finishers, 2014 Sauber Formula 1 prospect Sergey Sirotkin took advantage of making a late mandatory stop to climb up the order to fifth, before he dived past Will Stevens at Turn 3 on lap 18 to take fourth.

Stevens later lost out to Will Buller as well, but he still moved up to third in the championship thanks to Antonio Felix da Costa failing to get off the line at the start and having to retire.

Da Costa's disastrous weekend, which included an overnight engine change after his overheating problems in race one, means he has dropped to fifth in the standings behind Melker as well.

Vandoorne later pulled into the pits to retire, meaning he lost significant ground in the title race too. The Belgian, is now 30 points adrift of Magnussen, having come into this weekend as the championship leader.
