Silverstone GP3: Carlos Sainz Jr edges Lewis Williamson in practice

Carlos Sainz Jr, Arden, Silverstone GP3 2013Carlos Sainz Jr celebrated his call-up by Red Bull for the upcoming Formula 1 young-driver test by topping the GP3 practice times at Silverstone.

The Spaniard lapped in 1m47.432s in a session that began in wet conditions but quickly dried out.

His MW Arden car was 0.439 seconds clear of Bamboo's Lewis Williamson, the former McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner enjoying a strong session.

Nick Yelloly was a last-lap improver to end the session third fastest for Carlin, ahead of Daniil Kvyat.

Valencia winner Conor Daly was fifth quickest, ahead of Melville McKee. Points leader Tio Ellinas was seventh fastest, surviving a huge spin on the exit of Luffield.

Dino Zamparelli was eighth fastest, with fellow Brit Jack Harvey slipping back to 11th after setting the pace in the middle of the session.
