Brands Hatch European F3: Alex Lynn takes pole hat-trick
Alex Lynn took a triple pole position for this weekend's Formula 3 European Championship races at Brands Hatch
Local man Lynn had a thrilling battle with Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes team-mate Lucas Auer in the first even-numbered session, edging out the Austrian by 0.049 seconds.
Their times were easily faster than championship leader Raffaele Marciello, who topped the odd group, in which times were slower before the track rubbered in.
The gap between Lynn and Auer was even narrower on second-fastest times, which set the grid for race two, with just 0.035s splitting the pair. Marciello was again quickest on second-best times from the odd numbers.
Marciello was top of the second odd-numbered session when it was red-flagged with less than two minutes remaining due to a heavy shunt for Michael Lewis at Paddock Hill Bend.
It took 20 minutes to extract the American from his Mucke Motorsport Dallara-Mercedes, and a further five before he was stretched into an ambulance and taken to the medical centre. He was conscious immediately after the impact, although there is no official update on his condition yet.
The delay meant that the second even-numbered session had to be reduced from 20 minutes to 15 owing to the circuit curfew.
Lynn finally bettered Marciello's best by a mere thousandth of a second and, with Auer second behind him again, this means that the top three on the grid for all three races will be Lynn, Marciello and Auer.
Sven Muller will line his Ma-Con Dallara-Volkswagen up from fourth position for the first two races, after narrowly edging out Harry Tincknell's Carlin Dallara-VW in the opening odd session. Tincknell turned the tables later on, securing a second-row berth ahead of Mans Grenhagen (Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-VW) and Muller.
Felix Rosenqvist is on the third row for all three races, the Mucke Motorsport driver not quite having an answer to Lynn and Auer in either of the even-number groups.
Tom Blomqvist (pictured) secured two fourth-row slots in his EuroInternational Dallara-Merc, while Jordan King achieved that feat once in his Carlin machine.
Josh Hill claimed a hat-trick of fifth-row starts as he headed the Fortec Motorsport trio, and will line up alongside Welsh single-seater rookie Jann Mardenborough's Carlin entry in all three races. The other driver to claim a top-10 grid slot was the unfortunate Lewis.
