Red Bull protege Daniil Kvyat gets European F3 one-off with Carlin

Red Bull junior Daniil Kvyat is to make his Formula 3 debut this weekend in the European championship round at Hockenheim

The 18-year-old Russian, who is the reigning Formula Renault ALPS champion, is racing in the GP3 Series this season, but is to compete in Germany as a one-off with the Carlin team.

Kvyat will join Carlin's regular quartet of Silverstone winner Harry Tincknell, Jordan King, Nicholas Latifi and Jann Mardenborough.

"This will be my first time in an F3 car so it's going to be very exciting," said Kvyat. "This race is to improve my experience so I'm not expecting anything magic. I will just do my job and see what it brings. With Carlin I expect we will have good foundations to work from."

The Kvyat deal marks the return of Red Bull proteges to Carlin's F3 line-up.

Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne respectively won the 2009 and '10 British titles with the team, while Carlos Sainz Jr was with the squad last season and Antonio Felix da Costa won the Macau Grand Prix.

Team boss Trevor Carlin said: "We're delighted that the Red Bull Junior programme have placed Daniil with us for Hockenheim. He's a very exciting driver and has shown a lot of talent in his career so far.

"The aim of the weekend is to give Daniil some more experience and it's very much a learning exercise, but despite that I expect to see some encouraging results from him."

Kvyat had his first taste of the Dallara-Volkswagen, the chassis raced last season by Pietro Fantin, at Pembrey on Monday.
