St Petersburg Indy Lights: Hawksworth wins after leaders tangle
Jack Hawksworth capitalised on some good fortune to win on his Indy Lights debut in St Petersburg
The Pro Mazda champion had rebounded from a bad start and was running third when leader and Schmidt team-mate Gabby Chaves was collected by second-placed Carlos Munoz as the pair went into the first corner on lap 10.
Chaves was an instant retirement, while Andretti driver Munoz was able to continue once serving drive-through penalty for avoidable contact, only to suffer a late gearbox failure.
With a clear track ahead Hawksworth set about opening a substantial gap, eventually crossing the line 4.9 seconds clear of Peter Dempsey.
Sage Karam completed the podium ahead of Juan Pablo Garcia.
Zack Veach and Jorge Goncalvez were the only other two classified finishers from the nine-car field after former GP3 runner Ethan Ringel capped off a frustrating weekend by suffering an unspecified mechanical problem early on.
