Sergio Perez pledges not to 'get desperate' over first F1 win

Sergio Perez insists that he will not "drive desperately" in pursuit of his first Formula 1 grand prix win

The Mexican is under pressure to break his duck having switched from Sauber to McLaren, but he is determined to focus on stringing together consistent results as he approaches his debut for the team in the Australian Grand Prix.

This follows an end to the 2012 season during which he became embroiled in several on-track incidents.

"I have no wins in F1 yet, so I want to win, but I am not going to drive desperately to get that win," said Perez.

"The most important thing is to be able to score points race after race."

Perez is uncertain whether he will be able to fight for victory as early as this weekend's season-opener.

But he is convinced that he is ready to get the best out of the McLaren MP4-28 on his first outing for his new team.

"It's a weekend where we don't really know where you are and you don't really know what to expect," said Perez when asked by AUTOSPORT whether he can fight for victory in Australia.

"I'm quite confident and I think I can do quite a good job.

"The car itself is not in the position that we want to be and there is some work to be done in the car to try to get the maximum performance out of it."

Perez added that he was keen to measure himself against new team-mate Jenson Button having been unable to do so accurately during pre-season testing.

"I will see where I am compared to Jenson," said Perez. "He will be my main reference this weekend because in testing it is quite difficult to see."
