Lucas Auer secures Prema Formula 3 seat for 2013

Lucas Auer will race for title-winning outfit Prema Powerteam in the revamped European Formula 3 Championship this year

The nephew of 10-time Formula 1 grand prix winner Gerhard Berger finished second in last year's German F3 Cup in his rookie season in the category.

The 18-year-old Austrian performed well on a one-off European F3 outing at Hockenheim last October with Van Amersfoort Racing.

However, Auer has now joined Mercedes-powered outfit Prema alongside Britain's Alex Lynn, who was confirmed late last year.

"Prema Powerteam is the most successful F3 team during the past years and I'm very happy to be a part of them now," said Auer, who won the opening race of the New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series at Teretonga last weekend.

"I've got really strong team-mates and I'm sure this will push me at the race weekends. So I'm really looking forward to the 2013 season."

Prema team principal Angelo Rosin, who ran Daniel Juncadella to the European title and the Euro Series crown last year, believes the duo will be among the most talented on the 2013 grid.

"Auer is a very interesting driver and we look forward to work with him throughout the season," Rosin said.

"I'm proud that he decided to choose our team, and also together with the already-confirmed Alex Lynn we will be able to rely on two of the most talented prospects of Europe."

Prema will run four Dallara F312-Mercedes this year with the third likely to be driven by Ferrari Driver Academy member Raffaele Marciello, the runner-up in last year's European championship.
