Shanghai WTCC: Yvan Muller stripped of podium after Menu collision

Yvan Muller's World Touring Car title hopes have taken a huge blow after the Frenchman was stripped of his podium finish in the second Shanghai race on Sunday

While battling for the lead of the race the three-time world champion hit his Chevrolet team-mate Alain Menu, pushing the Swiss driver wide and costing both time.

After investigating the incident post-race, the event stewards decided that Muller had caused an avoidable incident and added 30 seconds to his race time in lieu of a drive-through penalty.

The penalty drops Muller to 12th in the results and out of the points.

With Rob Huff in the third factory Cruze winning the race and Menu inheriting second, Muller is now third in the championship, 41 points behind Huff and six adrift of Menu with just 55 available from the Macau finale in a fortnight.

Additionally, five drivers have been penalised for gaining an advantage by cutting the chicane to avoid a first-race pile-up that also involved Muller.

The highest-placed driver to suffer was Tom Boardman, who drops from sixth to 12th because of a 30s penalty. Tiago Monteiro's seventh place becomes 13th while SEAT privateers Fredy Barth and Hugo Valente fall from 10th and 15th to 14th and 16th.

James Nash, who retired, was also penalised.
