IndyCar teams KV Racing Technology and HVM are considering forming an alliance next year in a deal that would bring Tony Kanaan and Simona de Silvestro together as team-mates.
If the partnership goes ahead, it would likely allow de Silvestro access to Chevrolet engines after having been the only driver to spend the entire 2012 season using Lotus units.
It will also mean that she has a team-mate to work with for the first time, with HVM having been a single-car team since she joined in 2010.
KV, meanwhile, ran cars for Tony Kanaan, Rubens Barrichello and EJ Viso this year, but currently only has Kanaan under contract for 2013, with Barrichello and Viso both understood to be keeping their options open.
HVM owner Keith Wiggins confirmed that discussions are underway, but cautioned that they are still in the early stages.
"It's no secret that there is some dialogue regarding collaboration, let's put it that way," he told AUTOSPORT.
"There are a lot more teams working together now. It will transpire in due course."
Former single-car teams Panther Racing and Dreyer & Reinbold joined forces in April after the latter switched from Lotus to Chevrolet engines, and both Chevrolet and Honda are known to be keen on minimising the number of single-car entries in their stables.
