Jamie Green not giving up on DTM title ahead of finale
Jamie Green has not given up hope of winning the DTM crown, despite having only a slim mathematical chance of coming out on top of the series three-way title battle at Hockenheim this weekend
For the first time in his DTM career, Green heads to the final race of the season in with a chance of glory, the Briton trailing his HWA Mercedes team-mate Gary Paffett by 18 points with just 25 available.
That means that if he repeats his final-race victory of last year, he needs to rely on Paffett finishing no higher than seventh and BMW's Bruno Spengler - currently Paffett's chief rival - coming home sixth or worse.
Green, who has raced for Mercedes in the DTM since 2005 and won most recently at the Norisring in June, is remaining philosophical on his chances.
"My hopes of winning the title are slim, not massively likely," Green said when asked by AUTOSPORT about the approach he will take to Hockenheim.
"I can only perform as well as I possibly can and see where that gets me. I'd obviously like to be a bit closer points-wise, but I'll just do my job and we'll find out who's the champion on Sunday."
Green said he is prepared to support Paffett's bid, but only if his own title hopes begin to fade as Sunday's race unfolds.
"I've been in the DTM long enough to understand the big picture here," he said. "It's very important for Mercedes to win the championship.
"I'd say it's quite unlikely that I can help Gary to win the title, but if the situation comes up where I can help him, I will.
"The ideal scenario for me is that I'll be out front and they'll be further back fighting with each other. That way I'd be denying Bruno points anyway, which is about as good help as I could give, I think."
