BMW says its competitive form has been a boost for the DTM show

BMW's rapid rise to prominence in the DTM has been a key factor in increasing excitement levels this year, according to the manufacturer's motorsport director Jens Marquardt

After returning to the series after a 20-year absence this season, BMW immediately surprised many when Dirk Werner qualified third for the opening race at Hockenheim.

Werner's Schnitzer team-mate Bruno Spengler then won second time out at Lausitz and has since added two more victories to close to within 11 points of Mercedes' Gary Paffett at the top of the standings with two races to go.

Marquardt believes that breaking up the two-horse race between Audi and Mercedes that existed from 2006-11 has made the championship more interesting for fans.

"Our performances so far have played a large role in making this DTM season so exciting and providing the fans with fantastic entertainment," he said.

"We will do our best to ensure that it remains exciting right through to the season finale in Hockenheim."

In addition to Spengler's title push, Augusto Farfus and Martin Tomczyk have also finished on the podium in races.

However, with only six cars in its line-up it remains behind the eight-car squads of Mercedes and Audi in the manufacturers' standings. BMW announced this week that it will expand to an eight-car line-up next year with the new MTEK squad.
