Baltimore IndyCar: Bruno Junqueira to stand in for injured Josef Newgarden

Champ Car veteran Bruno Junqueira will replace Josef Newgarden at this weekend's IndyCar race in Baltimore after the American was ruled out with a broken finger

Newgarden underwent surgery on his left index finger on Tuesday after breaking it in a crash with Sebastien Bourdais at Sonoma last weekend.

The Sarah Fisher Hartman driver said that he is targeting the season-finale at Fontana on September 15 for his return.

"I'm really disappointed to not be in the car this weekend but I know Bruno will do a great job," Newgarden said. "I'll be in Baltimore helping Bruno and the team in any way I can and focusing on healing for Fontana."

Junqueira was a three-time championship runner-up in Champ Car, picking up eight wins along the way. He is currently racing in the American Le Mans Series with RSR Racing, and said that he is looking forward to getting back into a single-seater for the first time since 2011 Indianapolis 500 qualifying.

"I am very happy to be back in IndyCar with SFHR for the Baltimore race weekend," Junqueira said.

"Sarah's team is very organised and has been fast all season. They have done a great job with Josef and I hope to give them a good race weekend in Baltimore while Josef is healing."
