Robin Frijns using new chassis after original destroyed in testing crash

Formula Renault 3.5 championship leader Robin Frijns has a new chassis for this weekend after his original car was destroyed in a testing crash earlier this week

The Dutchman's Fortec Motorsports team was conducting a day of straightline testing at the Millbrook proving ground in England with a local driver familiar with the facility, but towards the end of the day he suffered a heavy crash which trapped him under a barrier.

The driver, who was knocked unconscious in the accident, was hospitalised, but according to the team he has since been released.

Frijns, who was fifth and seventh fastest in the two FR 3.5 free practice sessions at Silverstone on Friday with the new car, told AUTOSPORT that he was 'amazed' at the work put in by his team to get the new car ready in time.

"The job the guys have done is so impressive," he added. "From the first lap I could tell the car was fine, so they did very well. Obviously we have some setup work to do, but I'm so pleased that we can focus on the normal things on track again."

Team boss Richard Dutton added: "Renault and [engine supplier] Zytek did a smashing job helping us get everything ready this week. We collected the new tub on Wednesday and the guys were working on it up until 2am today.

"It's not the sort of thing you need going into a race weekend, and it was a relief when the car did its first laptime this morning and we could see that everything was in order."
