Nico Muller fastest in rain-hit Formula Renault 3.5 session at the Nurburgring

Nico Muller topped a wet Formula Renault 3.5 free practice session at the Nurburgring on Friday

The Draco driver came out on top in the session as a result of being the fastest car on track while the conditions were at their best for a brief spell in the final quarter of an hour. He moved to the top of the order with 13 minutes to go, and a light shower in the final few minutes prevented anyone from challenging him.

Muller set his time during a flurry of activity, after several drivers had decided against running while the track was at its wettest during the first half of the session.

Arden Caterham's Alexander Rossi, who featured towards the top of the times for most of the session, ended up being the only other driver to get within half a second of Muller. Marco Sorensen was third for Lotus, but he was 0.6s down on Muller's pace.

The top five was completed by the two new additions to the 2012 grid. Series returnee Cesar Ramos was fourth fastest as he settled in with Lotus in place of the injured Richie Stanaway, while new Red Bull recruit Antonio Felix da Costa was fifth for Arden Caterham.

Earlier in the day, Carlin's Kevin Magnussen had topped the dry morning session by seven tenths of a second from Comtec driver Nick Yelloly, with third-placed Carlos Huertas (Fortec) the only other driver to get within one second of the Dane's pace.
