Rain is expected for this afternoon's session. Who will fare best in the wet? Join us later for more action from Montreal.
McLaren leads the way after first practice, but work to do on the other side of the side with Jenson Button's car, while Caterham have a hefty repair job to complete.
Other notables: Massa was 12th and Kimi Raikkonen ended the session in 15th place for Lotus.
Perez was eighth in the second Sauber, with Schumacher ninth and Jenson Button rounds out the top 10 for McLaren.
Rosberg was third for Mercedes, ahead of Alonso fourth, Webber fifth, Hulkenberg sixth and Kobayashi in seventh spot.
So Lewis Hamilton holds on and he tops the first practice session in Montreal with a time of 1m15.564s, just 0.118s clear of Vettel.
Vettel moves up one spot to second with a time of 1m15.682s after a better lap.
Vettel has found some clear space, but again catches traffic towards the end of the lap, moving through past one of the HRTs after the Casino hairpin.
The flag is out to wrap up first practice in Montreal.
89 min: Hulkenberg improves on the supersoft tyre and is up to sixth with a time of 1m15.986s.
89 min: Vettel predictably backs off by around five seconds in the first sector of the following lap.
88 min: Vettel caught traffic in the final stages of the lap. Two or three cars directly in front of him now and that will blunt his efforts on this next tour.
88 min: Vettel goes again and is quicker on this lap, eventually posting 1m15.801s for third.
87 min: McLaren and Ferrari are clearly hoping for some dry track later, remaining on the harder tyres to end the session.
87 min: Vettel was set to improve but he backed off in the final sector, as his team-mate Webber moves into fourth with 1m15.897s.
86 min: Rain is showing some way to the west on the radar and is expected to reach the circuit for this afternoon's session. This is hastening the team's work on the softer tyre.
85 min: Webber moves into seventh position with a time of 1m16.196s.
85 min: Alonso now back out of the Ferrari garage, with the team having corrected the problem that caused his earlier slow return to the pits.
85 min: Ricciardo and the HRT duo are also evaluating the supersoft compound, but it's not going well for the Spaniard, as he takes to the grass at Turn 3.
84 min: Hulkenberg moves into sixth with a supersoft tyre time of 1m16.146s.
84 min: The Red Bull pair are on supersoft rubber as well. Meantime, Rosberg is into a flying lap and approaches the Casino hairpin.
83 min: Rosberg is on track with a set of supersoft tyres bolted onto the Mercedes, as is team-mate Schumacher.
82 min: Hamilton gets his braking wrong for the tricky final chicane, smoking both front tyres before escaping over the run-off.
80 min: The incident where Vettel jumped past Bruno Senna at the final chicane in order to get a clear lap, will be investigated after the session.
80 min: Alonso slowly returns to the pits with a stuttering Ferrari, having planned to run to the end.
79 min: Some work going on at the rear of Mark Webber's car, as the mechanics look around the bottom of the rear wing and around the gearbox.
77 min: Kobayashi strings a lap together in his Sauber, moving up to fourth fastest in 1m16.000s.
76 min: Drops of moisture have returned and Vettel is starting to get more confident with the wall of champions. He takes his RB8 close to the edge as he completes another lap.
74 min: Looks like major problems for Button, with the gearbox and rear wing now removed from his McLaren.
74 min: 1m15.842s is the time for Alonso, putting him up to third fastest.
74 min: Vergne improves with a lap of 1m17.352s. He is 16th on the timesheet.
73 min: Alonso sets the fastest first sector time in his Ferrari.
71 min: Rosberg is back into the pits after a short run on the soft tyre. He is now second in the classification behind Hamilton. The gap is 0.218s.
71 min: Alonso was on an improving lap in his Ferrari but brakes a little late for the hairpin, locking a wheel.
70 min: Vettel finds his own way through traffic at the final chicane and takes the straight-on route to get past a slower car, before starting another timed lap.
70 min: Rosberg was saying earlier that Mercedes and the Pirellis are starting to get on better and better...

70 min: Hamilton meanwhile tops the order again with a new best of 1m15.564s.
69 min: The ploy works for the German and he crosses the line in 1m15.782s to top the order with 20 minutes to go.
69 min: Button is the only man other than the crashed Kovalainen not on track as McLaren put in some work on his car.
68 min: Hamilton tries a short-cut at the first corner, using the escape road after braking a little late.
