McNish hails best year of his career

Allan McNish believes he was a better driver in 2008 than at any time in his 20-year international career, after being named British Competition driver of the year at Sunday's Autosport Awards

The Audi driver, who scored his second Le Mans 24 Hours victory in June, then followed that up with fantastic victories at the Autosport Silverstone 1000km and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

The Scot told autosport.com that 'every lap had counted' this season.

"I think from a technical point of view yes, this has been the best year of my career," he said. "I have had some pretty good drives this year, even at Petit Le Mans where I crashed.

"Petit Le Mans, a lot of people think was my best drive, but in reality, I personally don't think it was."

McNish's accident on the installation lap of the American Le Mans Series finale, meant that he and co-drivers Rinaldo Capello and Emanuele Pirro began the race two laps down before staging a breathtaking fightback to take the lead in the final 20 minutes and win the race in the Audi R10 TDI.

"The whole circumstances of it made it a sweet victory," said McNish. "It was sweet because I recovered from the accident at the beginning, but that blotted it for me as well, because I made an almighty screw up.

"Overall though we had to operate at a high level this year because the car wasn't quite quick enough. It was a bit long in the tooth. But hopefully the R15 will be the fixing factor there."
