Giuliano Alesi stays with Trident for another GP3 season

Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi will stay with Trident for his sophomore GP3 campaign in 2017, it has been announced

The son of grand prix winner Jean, Alesi stepped up to GP3 last season with Trident, having finished fourth in the French F4 championship the previous year, but he only scored one point in the F1 support series.

He also took part in the post-season test in Abu Dhabi with the Italian outfit, finishing eighth on the final day.

For 2017, the 17-year-old will stick with Trident, joining the previously announced Kevin Jorg.

"I'm delighted to enter my second GP3 season with Trident," Alesi said.

"We worked really well during my debut year as I merged with the team and fitted well within their work method.

"We are still working with huge determination and we know exactly where to restart from in our preparation steps for the season ahead.

"My goal is to continue growing up professionally and become a constant feature among the frontrunners."

Team manager Giacomo Ricci added: "In the last couple of seasons, we remained in contention for title until the very last race and we are determined to provide our drivers with all the support needed to continue on the same path.

"Today's announcement regarding the Giuliano Alesi makes me extremely proud."

Trident has also confirmed that ex-F3 racers Dorian Boccolacci and Ryan Tveter will join Jorg and Alesi for next week's opening GP3 test at Estoril.

Elsewhere, Italy's Alessio Lorandi has secured a full-season drive with Jenzer Motorsport, having raced for the outfit on two occasions last year.

The Italian made a mid-season switch to GP3 last season, having raced in European F3 with Carlin during the first part of the year and taking a win at Pau.

He will partner India's Arjun Maini, who made a similar F3-to-GP3 switch last year.
