Imola European F3: Ferrari protege Antonio Fuoco tops practice

Ferrari protege Antonio Fuoco headed free practice for this weekend's Formula 3 European Championship round at Imola, as the 80 minutes of running were punctuated by five red flags

Fuoco, a race winner at Imola on his way to the 2013 Formula Renault ALPS title, was second to Prema Powerteam stable-mate Esteban Ocon in the first session, but lowered the overall fastest time by a tenth in the second period.

Ocon, who can clinch the championship this weekend, was third in the second session, behind Fuoco and closest title rival Max Verstappen's Van Amersfoort Racing car.

Felix Rosenqvist was fourth, and it was the Swede who caused the final red flag when he spun into the gravel at Rivazza just as the session was due to finish anyway.

The closely matched Carlin flotilla was headed by Antonio Giovinazzi in fifth, with team-mate Tom Blomqvist seventh - just behind Nicholas Latifi - and still experiencing pain in his left shoulder from his fall at home earlier in the week that caused him to miss the first day of testing.

Carlin team-mates Jordan King, Jake Dennis - the pacesetter on the first test day - and Sean Gelael rounded out the top 10.

Just behind them were F3 returnees Nick Cassidy and Will Buller.

The first red flag was caused when Santino Ferrucci spun into the gravel at Acque Minerali, the second when Jules Szymkowiak's engine caught fire and he stopped on track, and the third and fourth by spins at the Villeneuve chicane for Spike Goddard and Alexander Toril.

Lucas Auer was another in the wars when he crashed at Villeneuve. The Austrian will be fine to drive in qualifying but has a bandaged left hand.

Tatiana Calderon has taken over the car of Sandro Zeller for the weekend after her own sustained heavy tub damage from the hefty sleeping-policemen kerbs at the Tamburello chicane on Wednesday.
