Audi to rebuild damaged WEC cars around spare monocoques

The two Audi R18 e-tron quattros heavily damaged in the World Endurance Championship opener will be rebuilt around spare monocoques in time for the second round at Spa

Audi has brought its two spare tubs - one which was at Silverstone and one which travels with its test team - into play after both R18 monocoques were damaged in the accidents sustained by Lucas di Grassi and Benoit Treluyer at Silverstone.

Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich, who had said after Silverstone that it would be a race against time to get the cars ready for round two, said: "We've got to prepare two new cars between now and Spa, which imposes an extreme load on the squad.

"Then we're going to concentrate on running an impeccable race: we want to rectify the unfortunate race at Silverstone."

It is understood that the two damaged chassis have been returned to their Italian manufacturer for repair and that one of them could make it to Spa to be on hand as a spare.

The third Audi entry at Spa, to be driven by Oliver Jarvis, Filipe Albuquerque and Marco Bonanomi, will run in Le Mans aero configuration, as in 2013.

The car has a longer tail, which extends to the back of the car and has a shallower-angle rear diffuser.
