Cochet wins Pau street race
French Formula 3 title contender Jonathan Cochet dominated today's Formula 3 European Cup race at the Pau street circuit in his Signature Elf-run Dallara-Renault, beating off a stern challenge from the similarly-powered ASM Elf car of Tiago Monteiro
Cochet took an instant lead from pole position, and was able to maintain a gap of several seconds to Monteiro until the chequered flag.
"It was great to win in front of so many good drivers from the British, French and German championship," Cochet said after the race.
British F3 series leader Antonio Pizzonia was forced to retire his Manor Motaworld-run car from fourth place with gearbox failure, while chasing leading German F3 runner Patrick Friesacher for third place.
Japanese Ryo Fukuda inherited fourth to keep his French F3 championship lead intact.
RC Benetton Junior star Nicolas Kiesa finished an impressive fifth after passing his team-mate, Milos Pavlovic, in one of the few overtaking moves of the race.
