Track issue cost Argentina WTCC date
World Touring Car Championship promoter Marcello Lotti says the cancellation of the planned Buenos Aires event next year happened because work required to re-homologate the circuit for international racing would not have been completed in time
The series had been due to visit the former grand prix venue on 3 April, but was now replaced the Buenos Aires round with a return to Zolder on 24 April
"Our plan to race in Argentina reached a deadlock because the event promoter and the local government were not in a position to grant the work that needed to be done to re-homologate the Buenos Aires circuit in time for the event," said Lotti, who remains hopeful that the WTCC can visit Argentina in future seasons.
"Therefore we have jointly decided to put off the championship's first visit to Argentina until all the issues are solved and we will work together to make this happen in the near future."
He was pleased that Zolder had been able to slot straight in as a substitute.
"Looking for a replacement, the logical choice was Zolder which hosted the WTCC this year in a very successful event," Lotti added.
