Alfa Romeo will use the 147 hatchback in next year's World Touring Car championship if it pushes the green light on its full return to the series, reports this week's Autosport.
The Italian manufacturer's sports boss Claudio Berro has confirmed that the 147 would be used in preference to the 159.
He insisted that confirmation of the programme was a month away however.
"We want to compete in the WTCC but at the moment it isn't fixed," he said. "If we compete it will be with the 147."
Alfa appears to be holding off announcing its 2007 programme until next month's Paris motor show.
Any decision is a foregone conclusion, because the manufacturer is signed up to the WTCC until the end of 2008.
Berro explained that the 147 would be used for two seasons, after which Alfa Romeo's motorsport direction could change. He added there was a "need to study future projects".
