World Cup to be revived

The idea of an end-of-season shoot out between the best Super 2000-spec tin-tops has been proposed by European Touring Car Championship boss Marcello Lotti. He has won the backing of the sport's governing body, the FIA, to plan the revival of an event that ran from 1993-95.

Lotti has yet to decide if cars from the ETCC will be invited or whether the event will just be confined to the top cars from the four national series that will be open to Super 2000 cars next year.

"I've asked permission from the World Council [the FIA's legislature] to organise a World Cup and they have said yes," said Lotti. "Now we need to work out just how to do it.

"My primary goal is to help raise the profile of the national championships running to our rules. An event like this could be a big boost for them. It is likely that we would invite the first six or seven cars from each championship."

The leading contenders form the Swedish, Danish and German series would be eligible to compete in the World Cup, along with the most successful teams running Super 2000s in next year's British Touring Car Championship.
