Wiechers to sit out 2014 World Touring Car Championship

Wiechers will sit out this year's World Touring Car Championship after failing to secure a deal to run in the top category

The team has been a WTCC regular since its formation in 2005, when it also secured the first of two privateer drivers' titles.

Last year it triumphed in Argentina with invitational driver and local favourite Jose Maria Lopez, who has subsequently joined Citroen's new factory effort.

Team manager Dominik Greiner said its was not financially feasible to field a private effort in TC1, and not appealing enough to compete in the TC2 class in which last year's cars are eligible.

"It is with a heavy heart that we will not show up for the season start of the WTCC for the first time in nine years," Greiner said.

"To this day, and the entry deadline for the 2014 season, we have looked at all the options to start this season.

"Unfortunately, the demand for a TC2 vehicle this season is virtually non-existent." "Our goal is quite clear: to go for a TC1 vehicle in 2015."

Wiechers' withdrawal comes a fortnight after Bamboo confirmed it was pulling out of the series after failing to raise the budget needed to compete in the top class.
