Spa ETCC 2: Muller strikes back
BMW's Jorg Muller won the second race of the FIA European Touring Car Championship at Spa-Francorchamps today (Saturday)
Starting fifth on the grid, the Schnitzer star grabbed second on the opening lap, right behind early leader Fabrizio Giovanardi's Alfa. A melee at Les Combes involved Pierre-Yves Corthals (BMW) and effectively ended opening race winner Nicola Larini's chances. He was forced to pit at the end of the opening lap with a broken rear wheel and accused his assailant of being "unprofessional".
Giovanardi led for four laps, but the pressure from Muller proved too much and he slipstreamed past the Alfa into Les Combes. Rickard Rydell, meanwhile, made it a thrilling three-way fight in his Volvo, but despite his best efforts he just couldn't quite find a way past the two leaders.
Giovanardi was closing up for a last lap attack when his transmission failed, however, gifting second to Rydell and promoting Tom Coronel to the podium in his Carly-Isert BMW.
Jordi Gene took fourth in his Ravaglia-run car, just pipping the AGS Alfa of Paolo Ruberti. The second Volvo of James Hanson scored the final point on offer, capping a successful weekend for the Swedish manufacturer.
