Pasquale di Sabatino joins Engstler for 2014 WTCC

Team Engstler has signed former Formula Renault 3.5 race winner Pasquale di Sabatino to complete its 2014 World Touring Car Championship driver line-up

Di Sabatino will partner team principal Franz Engstler at the wheel of one of the squad's TC2-spec BMW 320 TCs.

The Italian's only previous touring car experience came during a limited WTCC campaign in a Bamboo-Engineering-run Chevrolet Cruze in 2012.

Di Sabatino showed occasional flashes of promise in the first half of the season, alongside fellow rookie Alex MacDowall, before being replaced by experienced touring car racer Michel Nykjaer at the Curitiba round in July.

Bamboo reported at the time that di Sabatino stepped down due to illness.

"Coming back to WTCC is a dream come true," said Di Sabatino. "I'm very pleased to race alongside an experienced driver like Franz Engstler, I can learn a lot from him.

"Now I have to get used again to racing after a two-year break that has lasted since the 2012 WTCC event in Portimao."

Engstler team manager Kurt Treml added: "We are happy we managed to find a last-minute deal with Pasquale. He has some experience in WTCC and we expect some good results from him."

The opening round of the 2014 WTCC season starts in Marrakech on April 13.
