Magny-Cours 2: Müller makes it a double
BMW Team Deutschland driver Jörg Müller won the second race in the European Touring Car Championship at Magny-Cours today (Sunday). Nicola Larini and Duncan Huisman finished second and third. Müller's team-mate Dirk Müller - along with Fabrizio Giovanardi and Ricard Rydell - started at the back, after applying for dispensation from the parc fermé authorities for car repairs between races.
Paolo Ruberti started on pole - following the top-eight reversed grid rule - but it was Carly Motors' Tom Coronel who sprinted into the lead as the lights went out. He was followed by Huisman, Antonio García, Roberto Colciago and Paolo Ruberti.
Britain's Andy Priaulx was sent into a spin as the field arrived at the hairpin for the first time and was then hit by Sardelli, unfortunately both cars were too badly damaged to continue. They were not alone, however, as Gabriele Tarquini, Dirk Müller and Ruberti were also involved in the incident and subsequently retired.
Eric Cayrolle then dropped out with a suspension problem, as André Couto went off on the oil left by the first lap pile up. Meanwhile, García was having a little more success, fully recovered from the shock of his 25-second penalty in Race One he overtook Colciago for fifth.
Rickard Rydell was again the unwitting victim of a shunt which resulted in the second 25-second penalty being levied. This time it was Frank Difenbacher who pushed him off, he finished last as a result.
But by then Jörg Müller had stretched his margin efficaciously to five seconds and held it, despite a final rush by Alfa's Nicola Larini. Huisman and Coronel gave Carly Motors a fantastic three-four formation finish, while Colciago recovered fifth place from García.
