Giovanardi dazed in test shunt
Six-time touring car champion Fabrizio Giovanardi required hospital checks after a high-speed testing shunt wrecked his Autodelta Alfa Romeo 156 Gta in a Michelin tyre test at Vallelunga in Italy
Giovanardi, who only recently re-signed for Alfa after spending 2003 with BMW, hit the barrier at the infamous Trincea bend and complained of dizziness and neck pain after the crash. He was taken to hospital in Rome, where he was given the all-clear and later returned to the circuit.
His team-mate, Gabriele Tarquini, also suffered a bad day due to engine problems with his Alfa, which meant newboy Augusto Farfus didn't get a run. BMW's Antonio Garcia recorded the fastest time of the day in his Ravaglia-run 320I at 1m17.32s, although Schnitzer BMW driver Dirk Muller set a much faster time on Saturday, lapping in 1m16.86s.
Garcia was second fastest on Saturday, ahead of Muller's team-mate Jorg Muller in the second Schnitzer car. Tarquini was fourth fastest, lapping in 1m16.99s. BMW's Alessandro Zanardi also took part, but his track time was stymied by a lack of track time due to problems with his hand control system.
