Gene leads SEAT ETCC attack
Spanish car manufacturer SEAT has confirmed that it will enter a two-car team in the European Touring Car Championship next year
Jordi Gene, experienced older brother of Formula 1 tester Marc, will lead the attack in one of the make's 2-litre Toledos. German Formula 3 graduate Frank Diefenbacher will drive the other.
The manufacturer, which is owned by Volkswagen, is also exporting its one-make Leon Cup to Britain next year, but has chosen the ETCC over the British Touring Car Championship for its factory team.
SEAT Sport president Winfried Burgert said: "Of all the different international championships, the ETCC is most in line with SEAT's targets. The races are run with cars which are closer to road cars and it is held in Europe, where SEAT's main markets are located. Another plus is that the ETCC is given excellent TV coverage since it is included in Eurosport's Super Racing weekends."
He added that the Toledo model was chosen because it offers the best aerodynamics for the highest top speeds in the SEAT range of cars.
