Chevrolet set to expand to five cars
Chevrolet could run as many as five cars in the World Touring Car Championship next season, this week's AUTOSPORT magazine revealed
The manufacturer's future in the sport was uncertain earlier this year, following parent company General Motors filing for bankruptcy protection, but with both BMW and SEAT still not committed to the series for 2010 an increased campaign could generate more value for the Chevrolet brand.
Factory team RML has won 17 races in the last three seasons but has been unable to compete with rivals BMW and SEAT in the manufacturers' championship because both run five works cars to Chevrolet's three.
Chevrolet Europe motorsport manager Eric Neve admits that he would like to run more cars in an attempt to challenge for the crown.
"This has been on the radar for some time and we've put a lot of effort into the plan for next year," Neve told this week's AUTOSPORT.
"The only way to be competitive in the manufacturers' championship is to have as many cars as possible."
Lead drivers Rob Huff and Alain Menu are believed to have re-signed with RML for next season, while reigning champion Yvan Muller and former British and European Touring Car champion Fabrizio Giovanardi have been linked to the team.
