Rookie class added to WTCC
The World Touring Car Championship has launched a new rookie class for the 2010 season
Any driver who has not yet completed a full season in the series is eligible to score points in the Rookie Challenge, which they will run in as well as the overall and/or independent classes.
The decision to introduce the new class follows the outlawing of any SEAT Leon TDi from the indepedents' class, meaning that the Zengo-Dension-run car of Norbert Michelisz and the SUNRED Engineering cars of Michel Nykjaer and Fredy Barth are forced to compete against the true factory-backed entries.
"We have a number of young drivers who joined the championship this year for the whole season and this gave us the idea to establish this Rookie Challenge to encourage and reward the new competitors," said series promoter Marcello Lotti.
Points will be awarded to the first eight finishers in the class, scoring 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
As well as Michelisz, Nykjaer and Barth, the Chevrolets of Harry Vaulkhard and Darryl O'Young and the BMW of Mehdi Bennani will be eligible for rookie points.
